Inspired by Georges Bizet’s blazingly popular score, this original full-length production has dazzled audiences from coast to coast. Choreographer William Soleau retells the tale of the magnetically beautiful gypsy and her desperate lover in a contemporary ballet style that weaves together both classical and modern influences. Intricate storytelling, enigmatic choreography, and Bizet’s passionate, immortal music make this Carmen a true tour-de-force of theatrical drama.

Visionary resident choreographer William Soleau has choreographed more than 20 ballets on State Street Ballet, all to critical and popular acclaim. Well known for his emotionally evocative choreography, exquisitely detailed storytelling, and powerfully theatrical depth of expression, Mr. Soleau’s creations have propelled State Street Ballet to the forefront of innovation and evolution in the constantly changing world of dance. With his Carmen, the audience is pulled into the fiery, passionate, and fabled world of the temptress of Sevilla, breaking the illusion of the fourth-wall of the theater and becoming voyeurs as the drama unfolds before them. Mr. Soleau’s choreography is beautifully detailed, rich with symbolism, subtlety, and heartrending moments of pathos, and Carmen, having toured throughout the United States, is destined to become one of his signature works.

Long-time State Street Ballet collaborators A. Christina Giannini and Mark Somerfield once again have put their artistic brilliance on display. Expertly-crafted costumes, innovative sets, and dramatically expressive lighting design promise a most memorable visual experience for theatre-goers. Carmen’s scenic design alludes to the dusty streets of Sevilla, the moody twilight of a gypsy camp in the mountains, and the emblematic circular shape of the Spanish bullring. Scenic artwork by Stefania Piazzo is the compelling, yet abstract finishing touch to this story of love, jealousy, and the hands of fate.
