Common Ground

This sensational spring program has three very different companies exploding onto the same stage as never before. A first-time collaboration between State Street Ballet, Eisenhower Dance, and Santa Barbara Dance Theater,Common Ground exemplifies the notion that art is something that can be engaged in by more than individual artists alone. The universal language of dance transcends all walks of life, and has tremendous unifying and healing powers. The exploration of change, human connection, the cycles of life, and the strength of humanity are the collective threads in this evening-length program featuring each company performing at the height of its powers.

Eisenhower Dance, the Michigan-based contemporary dance company directed by Laurie Eisenhower, burst onto the Santa Barbara dance scene in the fall of 2009 when they performed alongside State Street Ballet in the highly acclaimed Motown in Motion at the Lobero. A sold-out crowd cheered and applauded the highly energetic and skilled company, hailed by the Chicago Tribune as “a nice balance between hip fun and serious dance.”

Santa Barbara Dance Theater, the professional modern dance company in residence at UC-Santa Barbara and under the new leadership of Christopher Pilafian, has been an integral part of the Santa Barbara dance community for 35 years. The Independent says the newly-reformed company is already breaking bounds “with a cast of accomplished, committed dancers and a repertory that ranges from sassy to sublime.”

Montreal-based and Mexican-born choreographer Edgar Zendejas has had works commissioned and performed by Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet, Luna Negra Dance Theater, Les Ballets Jazz de Montreal, and Ballet de Monterrey, and was awarded first prize in Hubbard Street Dance Chicago’s National Choreographic Competition in 2010. His movement and style explore the qualities of the human soul with humor and delicacy, and his choreographic voice speaks to the core of humanity.

The haunting music of award-winning composer Max Richter has been the backboard for numerous choreographic creations over the past few years. He is considered to be one of the most influential composers of the last decade, spearheading a broadening of classical music into the neo-classical and electronic music worlds. His grounding in postmodern and minimalist compositions provide choreographers with freedom of interpretation and representation. The Line of Best Fit calls his music almost “transient, like a dream wafting through a room.” His recomposition of Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons will be the stunning musical essence of this evening's finale – a personification of the spirit of human existence, through dance, music, movement, and visceral connection.

Tickets available online at www.granadasb.org, or by calling the Granada Theatre Box Office at 805.899.2222. Discounts available for groups of 10 or more! Ask the Box Office for details and pricing.
