Janey (Kawaguchi) Campbell

Janey joined the New York City Center Joffrey Ballet in the 1970s when dance was revolutionized by Robert Joffrey and Gerald Arpino. Her favorite roles were the Acrobat in the 1973 revival of Massine’s Parade (Jean Coctou, Pablo Picasso, Eric Satie), Marie Taglioni in Joffrey’s Pas des Deesses, Robbin’s Moves, Yellow girl in Arpino’s Confetti, Jooss’ Green Table.

As most dancers find, the career is brief and Campell, through her community activism, found a career in fundraising to advance non-profits. The Culver City Education Foundation, Crossroads School, Otis College of Art and Design, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Willows Community School and LA Opera followed. In 2023, she retired from the Music Academy of the West. She is delighted and honored to be part of the ongoing trajectory of the State Street Ballet.
